Robert Poulton

The baritone Robert Poulton was killed in a car crash on Tuesday. He was touring with Glyndebourne Opera on Tour and they cancelled Wednesday's performance of Rusalka in Norwich (in which he was playing the gamekeeper) out of respect. He trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and developed his career in the Glyndebourne chorus and remained a stalwart with that company. Other notable role included the acrobat and lion tamer in Lulu for ENO, the Postman in Buxton Festival's Kaschei the Immortal, Scarpia  Falstaff, and the Forester (Cunning Little Vixen) for Grange Park Opera,  Scarpa with Scottish Opera, La Traviata and Rigoletto with Opera Holland Park, and a memorable Marco in Gianni Schicchi with the Royal Opera. As a singer he had remarkable breadth and he will be sorely missed.
